Summer break presents both an opportunity and a challenge for families to support a culture of learning. During summer break, students can lose up to one month of instruction. This loss, known as “summer slide” is directly related to student achievement. Passport to Success reduces summer learning loss by encouraging students and families to participate in summer learning activities at local museums, science centers, libraries and cultural institutions. This year’s campaign will take place June 9 – August 20, 2018.
Community partners support Passport to Success by engaging students and their families throughout the Greater Los Angeles area in summer learning adventures. Partners open their doors to families, engage students in learning activities, stamp the student’s passport and track Passport to Success visits. Families In Schools (FIS) highlights partners’ events on the summer learning kit materials, announces activities via weekly summer learning newsletters and social media channels. In addition, we share tips on how to implement the campaign at learning sites as well as further information on summer learning loss. Together with the Passport to Success Community Partners, FIS aims to provide free or low-cost summer learning activities to all families.
