Alliance 2019 Breakout Session
Parents and educators are constantly searching for homework help for their students to be more successful in school, but not everyone knows where to find them. Join this interactive session conducted by youth librarians to learn more about the FREE resources and databases the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) has available to students and families. This session will introduce and demonstrate the importance of building strong community relationships between libraries, families, students, and schools to help students achieve and succeed.

Cathie Chenoweth is the School Liaison for the Los Angeles Public Library system. Before Cathie became the School Liaison, she was a Young Adult Librarian for the Los Angeles Public Library system. Cathie also has worked as an elementary school librarian. Prior to earning her Masters in Library Science, she was an elementary school teacher. Cathie has earned her BA in Liberal Studies and Teaching Credentials from California State University Fullerton and her MLIS from San Jose State University.
Susan Bougetz grew up in the San Fernando Valley loving books and libraries thanks to her librarian mother. After receiving two degrees in theatre (UCLA and Columbia), she realized when taking her toddler son to story hours all over town that she, too, could be a children’s librarian! She got her MLIS from San Jose State University and has worked for the Los Angeles Public Library ever since. She is currently the Children’s Librarian III at the Platt Branch in Woodland Hills.
Corinda Humphrey, Young Adult Librarian 3 with Los Angeles Public Library. I have served as a Young Adult Librarian in the Central Southern Area for almost 15 years where I lead outreach and train new YA Librarians. I also provide programming, collection development and coordinate teen volunteers and handled the Summer Lunch program teen staffing at the branch for the past 6 years.
Marcia Melkonian is the Young Adult Librarian III for the West Valley of the Los Angeles Public Library system. Previously, Marcia worked as a Library Coordinator in both the Los Angeles and Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School Districts. Having earned a Masters in Education (’91) and a Masters in Library and Information Studies (’12) from UCLA, Marcia has over 30 years of experience serving as an Educational Consultant to museums and educational institutions.
