Los Angeles County is faced by one of the lowest literacy rates in the country with 66% of low-income, African American and Latino 3rd grade students reading below grade level (California Department of Education, 2011). Failure to read proficiently is linked to higher rates of school dropout, which suppresses individual earning potential as well as the nation’s competitiveness and general productivity (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2011).
The Million Word Challenge is a literacy campaign that encourages preschool – 12th grade students to read millions of words outside of school time. Each year, 200,000 students in over 300 schools participate in the campaign and explore the joy of reading. At the annual campaign’s culmination in May, each participating school will select one student winner to receive a $50 gift certificate to purchase books of their very own. Join your community and help sponsor a student that has worked hard to reach their goal of reading a millions of words outside of the classroom. For many of these children, building their own home library is a life changing experience. By joining your community in helping create literacy opportunities and awareness across L.A. County, you are helping students gain the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
