Families In Schools at the College Board’s Annual Prepárate Conference (News Release) February 25, 2010 Contact: Carolina H. Malone 213-484-2870 x 256 Los Angeles, CA - On March 1-2, 2010, Families In Schools staff joined 400 educators from across the nation in San Diego, Calif., at the College Board’s Prepárate conference, “Educating Latinos for the Future of America.” The College Board, founded in 1900, is composed of more than 5,700 schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations. Families In Schools (FIS), a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles co-presented “Career and Academic Preparation Academy: Preparing Students Beyond Undergraduate Programs”, and participated in discussions about the importance of education for Latino’s workforce success. FIS staff members, Ms. Carolina Hernandez-Malone and Ms. Cecilia Gonzalez, College Awareness and Preparation Programs Director and Coordinator respectively, will focus on their experience in helping Latino students and their parents set college as a goal and understand the relationship between a college education and career attainment. FIS is committed to increasing the number of Latinos intent of making the college dream a reality. In the last 10 years, FIS has partnered with schools and districts on programs which help parents and students explore college and careers. “We find that most students and parents have little knowledge about how to prepare for a career, but programs like these allow them to begin the dialogue and understand how education is linked to their career dreams. Our partnerships are critical in reaching out to a wide Latino audience, enabling them to seek out college and careers” stated Ms. Hernandez-Malone. Evaluation of FIS college awareness programs indicate that these have significantly increased student-teacher communication about career goals, student knowledge about career options, financial aid, admission requirements, and college costs. Prepárate 2010 will inspire powerful thinking around the key issues that affect all Latino students including: ensuring Latinos have access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives, developing a college-going culture at home and in schools, forging effective education partnerships to support students from preschool through college, strategies for engaging all Latino students, and solving the issues facing undocumented students.
