Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors Recognized as Breakthrough Family Engagement Strategy

Los Angeles, CA – The National Family, School, and Community Engagement Working Group, convened by the Harvard Family Research Project, released a report recognizing Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors as one of twelve breakthrough family involvement programs nationwide. The working group of national education experts recommended the program as a “bottom-up” problem-solving approach for policymakers and educational leaders to consider as they attempt to reform public education.  Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors is the nation’s first evidence-based parent leadership training program for Latino parents with children 0-5 years of age. The program builds parenting, leadership and advocacy skills, is based on popular education, and draws on the real life experiences and cultural strengths of its participants. The recommendations by the national working group come at a critical time when the Obama administration is looking for bolder educational reform strategies. The working group indicated that Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors aligns with the Obama administration’s reform priority of turning around low-performing schools. “The program can be a valuable strategy to increase parental leadership and engagement which result in higher student outcomes,” said Sandra Gutierrez, National Director of Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors.

Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors is a program of Families In Schools (FIS), a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, California. “Our organization is eager to make this exceptional program available to parent educators nationwide as a strategy to ensure Latino children are successful in school and in life,” said Maria Casillas, President of FIS.  For more information about FIS and Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors, please visit: www.familiesinschools.org.
