A Parent Engagement Conference 2009 Highlights

A Parent Engagement Conference to Improve Student Achievement was held on April 8 and 9, 2009 in Los Angeles. Families In Schools, along with partner organizations Parent Organization Network(PON)  and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), invited nationally acclaimed educators and authors Karen Mapp (Harvard Graduate School of Education) and Anne Henderson (Senior Consultant for the Annenberg Institute for School Reform) to facilitate discussion and present the most recent findings in the field of parent engagement.

The conference was especially designed for three separate audiences – LAUSD Local and Central District Staff, LAUSD Central District parent leaders, and Los Angeles area community based organizations working in school reform and parent involvement. Mr. Ray Cortines, Superintendent of LAUSD, welcomed participants on the first day and highlighted the importance of engaging parents in order to improve student outcomes. Conference attendees participated in interactive workshop sessions that allowed them to increase their knowledge on the value of parent engagement, explore the reality of collaborations, and uncover barriers/solutions to promote lasting partnerships between families and schools in support of increased student achievement.
