4th Annual Family College Day: Career Exploration Conference – March 28, 2009

Hollywood, East Valley, and Polytechnic high schools attended the Family College Day: Career Exploration Conference at Los Angeles Valley College from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.  We had a total of 200 attendees take part in a variety of college and career information workshops.  The day began with introductory words from our own Executive Director Jo Carcedo, followed by the program Director for Project STEPS/GEAR UP Sonia Nunez and motivational words from our GOT College Volunteer Leaders.  The GOT College Volunteer Leaders helped shape and coordinate many aspects of the day’s event while learning leadership skills.  Students had a chance to listen to professionals from a diverse group of individuals who shared their wonderful experiences and expertise.  Meanwhile, parents explored information on how to help guide their child on their career and college path.  Students enjoyed hearing from the panelist’s personal experiences and mentioned on the student evaluations that the panels were “inspirational,” “informative,” and helped them learn “to never give up” on reaching their goals.

Sample quotes from event:
“These speakers helped me a lot to continue to do research for whatever profession I choose to do in the future.”

“[I learned] that education is important and it's great to have a career and enjoy it as well.”

“The professional panels helped me a lot to prepare for college.”

“To never give up and you can do anything you put your mind to.”

GOT College Culmination – Dena Elementary

Congratulations to all students and their parents who completed the GOT College program at Dena Elementary on March 30, 2009.  GOT College! participants received information that helps them understand the California Master Plan, its purpose, the college going process and requirements as well as the finahttp://www.familiesinschools.org/site/images/stories/fieimages/culmination%2009_5.jpgncial aid opportunities available for college.  The culmination ceremony marks the program’s end and acknowledges the commitment families had toward making college a priority in their lives.  These poignant ceremonies, organized by school personnel, provide student and parent testimonies that often attest to the power of education, motivation and the will of many parents as well as their children to achieve higher education.  In addition, the ceremony will often include performance by students, parents, and/or picture montage.  The ceremony ends with a traditional handing of certificates and medals for participants by school personnel, funders, and FIS staff.  Thank you to all school administrators, teacher mentors, parent coordinators, and all families involved for making the program a success.
