Organizations convened for their first all-grantee meeting on June 23, 2009 in Sacramento, California. Participants first reviewed the Initiative requirements and responsibilities, and then they were given the opportunity to network with policy makers. The day ended with a dynamic presentation from Jonathan Kaplan, a Policy Analyst from the California Budget Project, who shared with them how California schools receive and spend their money.

PHASE II RFP RELEASED SEPTEMBER

Families In Schools is pleased to announce Phase II of the Families Improving Education (FIE) Initiative, an initiative of the James Irvine Foundation facilitated by Families In Schools.  The Families Improving Education Initiative will support organizations in two regions that demonstrate significant need to improve educational outcomes and that have large and growing numbers of children/youth in disadvantaged communities: the Central Valley (Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tulare counties) and the Inland Empire (San Bernardino and Riverside counties).   Organizations that undertake a variety of advocacy-focused activities and that engage families in educational decision-making at the local, regional, and state levels are eligible to apply for funding.

Information meetings will be held in each region for organizations to learn more about the purpose, structure, and expectations of the initiative as well as receive support in the development of a competitive proposal.  Interested organizations are encouraged to attend, as the meeting will provide an opportunity to meet FIS project staff and gain a clear understanding of the planning and implementation phases of the initiative.
