The Million Word Challenge

The Million Word Challenge is a county-wide literacy campaign promoting a culture of literacy at home and academic achievement at school, culminating with the annual Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair.

The campaign helps to connect families and schools around the joy of reading “beyond the bell.”  The initiative challenges students to read millions of words outside of the classroom. Each participating school will have the opportunity to select one student per track to receive a $50 gift certificate valid for purchasing books at the Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair, held on June 7, 2008.  In partnership with First 5, the 2008 Million Word Challenge added an additional component encouraging parents to read to their young children.  This partnership is key to creating a world of readers since educational research overwhelmingly supports the premise that “the single most important activity for building understandings and skills essential for reading success appears to be reading aloud to children” (Bus, van Ijzendoorn & Pellegrini, 1995).  This initiative is promoted in partnership with the City of Los Angeles, First 5, Families In Schools, the Los Angles County Office of Education, and the Los Angeles Unified School District with supporting sponsorship from La Opinion, NBC4, T52, and Washington Mutual.
