Parent & Teacher Education

Parent and teacher learning opportunities developed by Families In Schools are always grounded in the most recent adult learning theory, parent engagement research and practice, school reform theory, and local school policies and procedures. Most importantly, the curriculum is developed with experiential learning at its core.

The implementation of a Families In Schools’ parent education program is designed for sustainability. The curriculum is made up of three parts, the facilitator implementation guide, the facilitator workshop guide and the parent workbook. We support school staff through the entire implementation process starting with the initial planning, through successful outreach work, into the workshop delivery, and finally with the assessment for future planning. The intention is that when we end our time with the school staff they will be able to continue offering the program to their parents for many years into the future.

The implementation of a Families In Schools’ teacher education program is designed for ACTION. The curriculum is customized to the school’s needs and is focused on helping school staff take their plans to another level of action as they develop and implement their parent engagement strategies.

Parent Education

Families In Schools' Parent Education programs assist parents in understanding how schools work, developing relationships with school staff and other parents, and increasing their college-knowledge such that they increase their efforts as effective advocates for their children’s education. Signature Parent Education programs include: Grade Level Transitions programs (gives parents access to the knowledge and skill building they need to support their children in successful transitions to middle school and high school) and Parent Academies (workshops that guide parents through their parental rights and responsibilities, and gives parents other critical knowledge on how to navigate the school system).
